Project Highlights

  • Regulatory Agency – Department of Toxic Control Substances
  • Contaminants of Concern – Tetrachloroethylene (PCE)
  • Remedial Strategy Applied – Soil Vapor Extraction, Bioremediation, Risk Assessment
  • Special Challenges – Owner Litigant to RP, Regulatory Delays

Project Summary

Murex was hired by the former owner and suspected responsible party (RP) of a commercial warehouse in South Los Angeles after the current owners discovered PCE impacts in soil vapor and reported the release to DTSC. Working with RP counsel, owner, owner’s counsel, insurer, and DTSC, Murex developed and implemented a comprehensive site assessment and baseline risk assessment. Remedy selection and design was an iterative process, with many stakeholders, mediation hearings, and regulatory review delays, however, a robust groundwater remedial pilot test provided strong support for the selected ERD remedy.

During the time that the remedy design and implementation were underway, vapor intrusion screening levels were revised downward by the State, requiring a review of soil vapor extraction well layout and soil vapor screening results, whereby further step-out testing was required.
